Dazu Grottoes (Dazu Rock Carvings)
The Dazu Grottoes (Dazu Rock Carvings) are a series of Chinese religious sculptures and carvings, dating back as far as the 7th century AD, depicting and influenced by Buddhist, Confucian and Taoist beliefs. Listed as a World Heritage Site, the Dazu Rock Carvings are made up of 75 protected sites containing some 50,000 statues, with over 100,000 Chinese characters forming inscriptions and epigraphs. The sites are located in Chongqing Municipality within the steep hillsides throughout Dazu County, located about 150 kilometers west of the urban area of Chongqing. The highlights of the rock grotto are found on Mount Baoding and Mount Beishan.
Fengdu ghost city
Fengdu Ghost City, located on the Ming Mount Fengdu country, on the northern bank of Yangtze River is known to most Chinese as the ‘Ghost City’. Having nearly two thousand years’ history, the Ghost City combines the culture of Confucianism, Taoism and Buddhism with the mystique of ghost. Many famous literary works like Journey to the West, Apotheosis of Heroes and Strange Tale of a Lonely Studio contain vivid references to Fengdu.
Huguang Guild(Huguang Hui Guan)
Huguang Guild(Huguang Hui Guan) is located in Yuzhong District, urban Chongqing. It is a complex of houses with yellow wall, prayer houses, opera house, and residence. It was built by immigrants from the southern provinces of Hubei, Guangdong, Guangxi and Hunan during the Qing Dynasty. The Huguang Guild Hall was the center of life for these people for more than 200 years. It is famous for its sophisticated architect skill with brick and wood carvings, gardens, pavillion, walls. Dongshui Gate, the most well preserved Chongqing ancient city wall is just under the Guild.
Ciqikou ancient town
Ciqikou is an ancient town in the Shapingba District of Chongqing, originally called Longyinzhen ,also known as “Little Chongqing”. There is a Chinese proverb: “One flagstone road, and one thousand years’ Ciqikou”. The name of the town can be traced back to porcelain production during the Ming (1368–1644) and Qing Dynasties. Ciqikou used to work as a busy distribution port located beside Jialing River. A thousand years after its foundation the town remains a symbol and microcosm of old Chongqing.
Songgai ancient town
Songgai ancient town is located in Hechuan district of Chongqing, 80km away from urban Chongqing city. Songgai ancient town was built before Song Dynasty, with more than 1000 years history. The remains of old architectures, beautiful sceneries, rich humanistic sites and unique dock culture leave very deep impression on visitors. Songgai Town has seven famous scenic spots: architecture built in Ming and Qing dynasty; ancestral halls and temples; winding broad stone streets; Fuzi Tomb; ancient county office; Chengong weir which is a hydraulic engineering built in Ming Dynasty; Wenzhong dam of Yangtze river.
Laitan ancient town
Laitan ancient town, is located at the east of the Hechuan District of Chongqing. It is regarded to be one of the ten most picturesque old towns in China. The town faces the Jialing River and has cliffs on three sides. With the rosy clouds rising slowly, the town seems to be in the clouds. The dishes with good taste are supplied by the eateries in the town. Laitan ancient town has a long history, which can date back to the Qing dynasty. The Er’fo Temple within town was built 1500 years ago in Tang Dynasty. It holds complex grottos with a giant Buddha cliff carving on cliff.
The Arhat Temple (Luohan Si), originally known as Zhiping Temple, was built during the Ziping reign (1064-1067 AD) of the Northern Song Dynasty, and rebuilt in the 1752. In 1885, the abbot of the temple, Longfa, built the Hall of 500 Arhats; the temple then changed its name to Arhat Temple. A notable feature of this century-old temple is the corridor flanked by ancient rock carvings found just after you enter the complex. With a length of more than 20 meters, there are altogether over 400 statues of Buddha inscribed on rocks in Song Dynasty.
Fengsheng ancient town
Fengsheng Town lies in the east part of Ba’nan District of Chongqing, 60 kilometers away from Chongqing. Fengsheng Town is an agricultural town in the mountain area. The average elevation of Fengsheng Town is about 550 meters, with fresh air and rich ground water storage. With geographic location connecting Sichuan, Chongqing and Guizhou, Fengsheng Town was called “No.1 Dry Dock of Yangtze River”. Fengsheng Town was originally built in Song Dynasty. The old streets are paved with blue stones. Town accommodates different typles of wood and brick palaces, halls, watchtower and temples with quadrangle courtyards, delicately carved wooden windows. The traditional folk lives can still been seem, for instance weighing apparatus making, blacksmith house, butcher house, bamboo instrument workshop, noodle farm, rice cake shop, rice wine workshop.
Zhongshan ancient town
Zhongshan anicent town locates in Jiangjin District, in the mountains close to Simian Mountain. It dates back to the Song Dynasty 800 years ago. It used to be a prosperous port town along the Sunxi River and a favorite of imperial court members.Today, some original structures remain, including four remarkable stone arc bridges, one of which is the country’s second longest, and nine ancient manors, which feature two distinct architectural styles and traditional fengshui principles. Temples and engraved tombstones built hundreds of years ago can also be found in the town.Zhongshan’s original 1,500 meters of streets have been reduced over the years by planners and natural disasters to only a portion of what they once were, but a leisurely stroll through the entire town—old and new—can take half an hour. Locals live in old wooden houses that jut out above the river, where, below, women do the day’s washing in depressions in the rocks.Some of the households have been converted into small showrooms displaying the collections of the families that lived there, including ancient coins and antique furniture.Other storefronts sell traditional medicine or offer fortune-telling services.
Anju ancient city
Anju ancient city locates in Tongliang country, 100km to the north west of Chongqing urban city. It was started in Sui Dynasty with 1500 years history. At the intersection of Qiong river and Fu river, Anju is the most important port town to the north of Chongqing in old times. It bears sophisticated blue stone pavement streets, beautiful Qing style wooden houses, charming local lifetyle and scenery riverside views. Anju ancient is famous for its 9 pavillion and 18 temples urban planning.
Hong Ya Dong
Hong Ya Dong locates in Yuzhong District, at the ancient Qian Si fortress gate. Hong Ya Dong literally means waterfall coming down from cliff with cave behind, and it is one of the 12 original Chongqing scenes. In ancient towns, the site is the openning of water from upper level city, the water forms waterfall over the cliff, and behind the waterfall there is a cave which can hold 100 people. The site is close to Jialin River, habitats built their house with one site leaning on cliff and floor suspended supporting by bamboo pillars. In recent years, the old stilted house has been restored to new Hong Ya Dong resort, which accommodates high class restaurants, theater, food street, craftsman street and hotels.
